Boston Senior Home Care (BSHC) was incorporated
on July 3, 1974 as a private, non-profit
corporation that provides case management,
service planning, and in-home social support
services to low-income persons who are sixty
years of age and older, or under 60 and
disabled. Supported by funds from the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts as well as private
donations, BSHC is committed to providing
programs and services to support all members of
our communities. That may mean low-income
elders, young individuals with disabilities, and
those that are acting as caregivers.
In the forty years since our inception, BSHC has consistently adapted to the changing needs of our client population. We have developed initiatives to relieve the isolation of elders in public housing projects, helped to identify and advocate for abused and neglected elders, and provided much-needed respite and support services for caregivers. We now provide options for younger individuals with disabilities to take charge of their own care.
Our client population has been historically underserved by existing policies and programs. In response to this need, BSHC has launched many innovations that support our consumers’ ability to remain in their chosen surroundings. Recent BSHC innovations include a risk assessment and intervention system designed to enhance nursing-facility discharges and to avoid unnecessary long-term placement, and expanded resources for caregivers. BSHC also pioneered the creation of supportive housing programs in Boston Housing Authority’s elderly and disabled apartment complexes; these programs, designed to reduce isolation and improve overall wellness among tenants, are a proven success and continue to expand to new buildings. For a full range of the programs we offer, please look under our Programs Menu.
BSHC has grown from a staff of three, serving a few hundred clients, to a staff of over one hundred and fifty, serving over six thousand clients. We cover many Boston neighborhoods as diverse as East Boston, Charlestown, the North End, Chinatown, Beacon Hill, the West End, South Boston, Dorchester, Mattapan, and other surrounding communities. Our staff speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Greek, Hebrew, Toisanese, and Cape Verdean Creole.
